What are the general requirements and regulations a property owner needs to know?
These items are summarized from City law:
- All exterior property areas must be maintained free of any accumulation of garbage, rubbish, junk and refuse.
- All exterior property areas must be maintained free of any accumulation of animal droppings and of any foul, offensive or obnoxious odors generated from the keeping of animals.
- It is unlawful to accumulate or store: junk, metal, wood, fabricated goods, building materials, containers or other items in a manner that creates a nuisance or rodent harborage. Generally, the zoning laws prohibit exterior storage of business related materials in residential areas.
- Every occupied building shall be supplied with approved rubbish containers which are of sufficient quantity and capacity to properly store all garbage and rubbish. Garbage and rubbish must be collected weekly by a licensed refuse hauler. In rental buildings it is the responsibility of the owner to provide the containers and the responsibility of the tenants to use them properly. Storage of refuse in plastic bags is not allowed. Outside storage of recyclable materials is not allowed.
- Firewood cannot be stored closer than ten (10) feet to a residence, cannot exceed five (5) feet in height and shall not be allowed to become a nuisance or rodent harborage. Firewood should not be stored in contact with the soil.
- Grass and weeds must be kept cut shorter than eight (8) inches.
- Bushes, trees and shrubs cannot obstruct the public sidewalk or alleys.
- Overgrown, uncontrolled vegetation, shrubs, trees, vines that are conducive to the accumulation of refuse, debris or vermin is not allowed.
- House numbers which are at least three (3) inches in height and which are reflectorized or illuminated are required to be clearly visible front and rear, from the street or alley.
- All garages, sheds and other buildings are required to be kept secure from unauthorized entry.
